Exodus 13:17-22 “God Is In Control”

THE SCRIPTURE TELLS US THAT GOD IS IN CONTROL

17 When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them along the road to the land of the Philistines, even though it was nearby; for God said, “The people will change their minds and return to Egypt if they face war.” 18 So he led the people around toward the Red Sea along the road of the wilderness. And the Israelites left the land of Egypt in battle formation.

19 Moses took the bones of Joseph with him, because Joseph had made the Israelites swear a solemn oath, saying, “God will certainly come to your aid; then you must take my bones with you from this place.”

REALIZE That God Is In Control – BE LIKE JOSEPH!

20 They set out from Succoth and camped at Etham on the edge of the wilderness. 21 The Lord went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to lead them on their way during the day and in a pillar of fire to give them light at night, so that they could travel day or night. 22 The pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night never left its place in front of the people.

Deuteronomy 8:6-20

Deuteronomy 8:6-20

1. God blesses us ___________________________  and _________________________

6 So keep the commands of the Lord your God by walking in his ways and fearing him. 7 For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land, a land with streams, springs, and deep water sources, flowing in both valleys and hills; 8 a land of wheat, barley, vines, figs, and pomegranates; a land of olive oil and honey; 9 a land where you will eat food without shortage, where you will lack nothing; a land whose rocks are iron and from whose hills you will mine copper. 10 When you eat and are full, you will bless the Lord your God for the good land he has given you.

2. Remember the LORD by Fleeing ______________ and ________________

11 “Be careful that you don’t forget the Lord your God by failing to keep his commands, ordinances, and statutes that I am giving you today. 12 When you eat and are full, and build beautiful houses to live in, 13 and your herds and flocks grow large, and your silver and gold multiply, and everything else you have increases, 14 be careful that your heart doesn’t become proud and you forget the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the place of slavery. 15 He led you through the great and terrible wilderness with its poisonous snakes and scorpions, a thirsty land where there was no water. He brought water out of the flint rock for you. 16 He fed you in the wilderness with manna, which your fathers had not known, in order to humble and test you, so that in the end he might cause you to prosper. 17 You may say to yourself, ‘My power and my own ability have gained this wealth for me,’ 18 but remember that the Lord your God gives you the power to gain wealth, in order to confirm his covenant he swore to your fathers, as it is today.

3. Flee ________________

19If you ever forget the Lord your God and follow other gods to serve them and bow in worship to them, I testify against you today that you will perish. 20Like the nations the Lord is about to destroy before you, you will perish if you do not obey the Lord your God.

Deuteronomy 8:1–5 “God Is Always Testing Us”

Why does God allow tests in life?

1 “Carefully follow every command I am giving you today, so that you may live and increase, and may enter and take possession of the land the Lord swore to your fathers.

  • THE INSTRUCTION IS GIVEN >>> GOD’S WORD IS IMPORTANT & MUST BE APPLIED TO LIFE

2 Remember that the Lord your God led you on the entire journey these forty years in the wilderness, so that he might humble you and test you to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands.

  • GOD USES TESTS TO HELP US.

3 He humbled you by letting you go hungry; then he gave you manna to eat, which you and your fathers had not known, so that you might learn that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.

  • GOD USES TESTS TO BUILD US.

    • (James 1:2–5, CSB) “Consider it a great joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you experience various trials, because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its full effect, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking nothing. Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God—who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly—and it will be given to him.”

4 Your clothing did not wear out, and your feet did not swell these forty years.

  • GOD USES TESTS TO SHOW US that He Provides!

    • (1 Peter 5:6–7, CSB) “Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that he may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your cares on him, because he cares about you.”

5 Keep in mind that the Lord your God has been disciplining you just as a man disciplines his son.

  • GOD USES THE TESTS TO GUIDE US

Deuteronomy 30:1–20 “ God Desires to Give Life”

Deuteronomy 30:1–20 “ God Desires to Give Life”

1 “When all these things happen to you—the blessings and curses I have set before you—and you come to your senses while you are in all the nations where the LORD your God has driven you,

  • Deut 29:19-23 tells us of Israel’s rebellion against God and His judgment

  • God knew what was going to happen because God knew where they were.

  • God knows where we are today.

2 and you and your children return to the LORD your God and obey him with all your heart and all your soul by doing everything I am commanding you today,
3 then he will restore your fortunes, have compassion on you, and gather you again from all the peoples where the LORD your God has scattered you.
4 Even if your exiles are at the farthest horizon, he will gather you and bring you back from there.

  • God is waiting for His people to return to him
  • God is still waiting for His people to return to him –
  • While He knew of our rebellion, He planned our restoration.
    (Romans 5:8)

5 The LORD your God will bring you into the land your fathers possessed, and you will take possession of it. He will cause you to prosper and multiply you more than he did your fathers.
6 The LORD your God will circumcise your heart and the hearts of your descendants, and you will love him with all your heart and all your soul so that you will live.

  • God knows what his people need.
  • God knows what we need as well.

7 The LORD your God will put all these curses on your enemies who hate and persecute you.
8 Then you will again obey him and follow all his commands I am commanding you today.
9 The LORD your God will make you prosper abundantly in all the work of your hands, your offspring, the offspring of your livestock, and the produce of your land. Indeed, the LORD will again delight in your prosperity, as he delighted in that of your fathers,
10 when you obey the LORD your God by keeping his commands and statutes that are written in this book of the law and return to him with all your heart and all your soul.

  • The Effects of a Changed Heart are Evidence That God Can Give Us Life.

    • The LORD your God will put all these curses on your enemies –

    • you will again obey him and follow all his commands –

    • The LORD your God will make you prosper abundantly in all the work of your hands –

11 “This command that I give you today is certainly not too difficult or beyond your reach.
12 It is not in heaven so that you have to ask, ‘Who will go up to heaven, get it for us, and proclaim it to us so that we may follow it?’
13 And it is not across the sea so that you have to ask, ‘Who will cross the sea, get it for us, and proclaim it to us so that we may follow it?’
14 But the message is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart, so that you may follow it.

  • God Has Put His Promise Before You Today

15 See, today I have set before you life and prosperity, death and adversity.
16 For I am commanding you today to love the LORD your God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commands, statutes, and ordinances, so that you may live and multiply, and the LORD your God may bless you in the land you are entering to possess.
17 But if your heart turns away and you do not listen and you are led astray to bow in worship to other gods and serve them,
18 I tell you today that you will certainly perish and will not prolong your days in the land you are entering to possess across the Jordan.
19 I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you today that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Choose life so that you and your descendants may live,
20 love the LORD your God, obey him, and remain faithful to him. For he is your life, and he will prolong your days as you live in the land the LORD swore to give to your fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”
